Variegated Dogwood
Discover the Variegated Dogwood
The variegated dogwood is a type of shrub that you may want to consider for a border around your home. They are very easy to grow and in the spring time they will offer gorgeous white flowers. They are large sized shrubs that fill out nicely so if you are looking for a way to change the way your front yard looks this could be the option you have been waiting for.
When you plant them, make sure you give them lots of space to grow. They can be about 10 feet tall as well as grow to be about 10 feet wide. Of course you can keep them shorter and trim them to keep them from getting so wide if you like. It can also take several years before they get to this point where you need to do so.
They do well in either partial shade or being in the sunlight all the time. They do require a good amount of water though. Before you add more water though you should check the soil an inch or two below the surface. If it is dry then add more so that it will be moist. During periods of rainfall you will often find it isn’t necessary to manually add any more water for them.
To help your variegated dogwood shrubs grow, it is a good idea to add some additional fertilizer to them in the spring. They will also require a bit of pruning once the flowers start to emerge. For the best appearance and the overall health of the shrubs, remove any signs of dead foliage from them.
There can be some common pests that love these shrubs as much as you do. Keep a watchful eye out for them so they don’t have a chance to destroy them. Thrips are a common one. These types of insects have wings and they seem to be more of a problem during the hottest months of the years. They can become a huge problem fast though because the females can lay up to 300 eggs in less than 45 days.
Take the time to remove weeds from around your variegated dogwood shrubs. This will ensure that the fertilizer you offer as well as the water helps the shrubs to thrive rather than the weeds. Avoid using chemicals to take care of weeds and pests though. They can be very harsh on such shrubs.
Take some time to conduct your own research. Explore if the variegated dogwood is a type of shrub that can do well in your climate. You also want to make a plan as to where you will plant them. Getting the soil ready for them isn’t hard but you do want to make it moist and offer plenty of fertilizer. The climate in your area will also determine the best time of the year to plant these shrubs.
Changing your landscaping around the house can be fun and it doesn’t have to be difficult. You may wish to include some other types of plants and shrubs too. This will give it a very dramatic look as well as one that is quite colorful. Even in the winter months, it can look very nice. While you won’t see the flowers bloom during this time of the year, the fullness of the shrubs are quite elegant.
They aren’t going to look old and dried up. The best part is that you don’t have to do anything to care for them in the winter. As long as they do have enough moisture they will do well. If you don’t like the hassle of maintaining a garden then this could be a way for you to get out of it.
